Regardless of whether you own or rent i would say the biggest financial consideration to having kids is mat leave and pay, day care and general cash flow in Yr 1 depending on how long you plan to be off work

That is very true. From where I am; the government offers mat leave for up to 18 months max and on employment insurance (max is $695/week), plus the child tax benefit. I do plan on having 1k/month at minimal, to be saved solely for the future mat leave (that is in addition to have EI). Day care wise; my mom is offering support on this end. As far as cash flow, obviously income will be reduced for when/if I go on mat leave, but we will figure that out.

What about moving to a lower cost of living city? I moved from Vancouver to the Edmonton area, and was able to buy my house without much fuss. Rentals are going up in the city, but you still get way more bang for your buck. My thought with waiting for a down payment to purchase on your own is do you know if you have any fertility issues? It can take some women much longer than anticipated to get pregnant, and with your advanced maternal age (I had my baby at 36, no judgement here), if you want to get pregnant, it would make sense to prioritize that over home ownership.

I have suggested even that to my husband as I can work anywhere I want (although I would have to apply first and get the job in said new city) but my husband does not want to change employers for his line of work plus he does not want to be far from my parents (who are retired) as they can offer support for watching children while we are working. They are already looking after my niece during certain days.
