How does one actually succeed in this business?
Hey folks
So I'm a "working" videographer in a fairly small town that tells itself it's a city in Australia. We have around 40,000 people and I'd reckon about 4-5 videographers that operate within the area. I started out around 10 years ago with a handy cam and a dream to do videography as a way of making enough money to upgrade my gear and work towards making films. 10 years later I've given up on the films altogether, I make music videos for tight-wad musicians and not a whole lot else.
I own at an estimate of around 10 thousand dollars of gear, most of which just sits in a cupboard not used for months between gigs. I used to do wedding videos as an option for income, but as most of us know that can get tiresome and I really couldn't get clients who'd pay me anything more than $1200 for a full day wedding. I've seen videographers do worse than what I was putting out making 2-3 grand yet as I upped my prices the jobs stopped coming in.
I do get occasional jobs to do social media centric content, mostly shooting high quality clips that are supplied to the client ready to be pieced together for their reels and such. I can't seem to make more than a few hundred a day from this either.
And don't get me started on the music videos. I have clients that complain about paying less than a grand for what I'm putting out, and fighting me the whole way with the edit.
Basically, I'm at the end of my tether with the industry. The other videographers in my area seem to work pretty steadily, and aren't putting out anything remarkably better than I reckon I've done. I will admit I struggle with being a people person, I'm a little awkward to talk to and I have trouble explaining ideas and how I'll execute them to the clients but I've always felt the work I do speaks for itself.
Before anyone asks to see my work, I just want to try and keep some anonymity here in case someone from my town finds this and takes offense.
I genuinely love doing this work, but I can't seem to get paid well enough to do it let alone get enough work to justify the gear and expense. I don't want to walk away from it all so... any advice would be really welcome.
Thanks for your time.
