How “active” or engaging is your therapist in your sessions?
I (40f) just started therapy again for the second time in my life but my new therapist seems pretty quiet and doesn’t really engage with me a whole lot in our sessions. Is that normal? The first time I did therapy was when I was in my early 20’s and I remember that therapist would engage with me a little more during our sessions and I remember always leaving those appointments with a renewed sense of relief; but unfortunately she moved away.
I know the job of a therapist isn’t to provide advice but I feel like I’m bulldozing the conversations and talking about 99% of the time. Even during the awkward pauses I feel like it’s my job to fill them with something. She doesn’t seem to guide me through anything nor does she ask many questions. During our last session she made a total of 2 comments that were super vague and not thought provoking (i.e, “that’s what anxiety will do to ya”, etc).
Is this how therapy works? If it matters, I see her for general anxiety and PTSD (no panic attacks, ocd, depression or meds).
