Medical Mal-Practice?

Active Duty military. Went in for an elective surgery to have a sigmoidectomy by a military surgeon. During surgery, the physician tore another section of my colon which wasn’t caught until 4 days later after complaining of pain so bad, I was asking to be euthanized. CT scan revealed the additional tear, and the surgeon admitted to causing it during the first surgery from pulling on my sigmoid colon. This was right before rushing me into emergency surgery, which I had a chance of not surviving due to stomach bile seeping into my abdomen for days. Was promised an easy 1st surgery and no ostomy… ended up with 3 total surgeries, a hopefully temporary ileosotomy, severe mental and emotional damage, and out of work from my dream job for the rest of the year.

Additional issues included my IV machine malfunctioned, allowing me to administer pain meds at a much shorter interval (every 2-3 minutes instead of every 8 minutes) than I was supposed to. I was so heavily sedated that it caused my breathing to drop to around 6 breaths per minute. Only reason I survived that was because a family member stayed with me in the ICU to wake me up all night when I essentially stopped breathing.

Lastly, had a wound vacuum hooked up after emergency surgery. Medical staff failed to ensure it was plugged in after moving to a room. Battery eventually died without alarming which caused suction to fail. Staff noticed and plugged it in without warning, causing maximum suction and pain so great that I passed out.

I can’t even explain the mental and emotional pain it has caused my family and I. What are your thoughts on this incident? Should something be done? Or is this an, “it is what it is” scenario?
