The use of ji ... re preposition

I don't quite get when I'm supposed to use ji ... re and when not. For instance, it's used when we want to say to write to someone (Ez ji wî zilamî re nameyeke dinivîsim.), but not when we say to give to someone (Tu deftera xwe didî mamosteyê xwe). Is there logic behind this or do I just have to learn for each verb if it's used or not?
