Winter in Japanese house (Kanazawa) without AC, how to stay warm?

Hi guys! Honest question. How to stay warm and survive in a Japanese house without AC during winter? I just lived in Japan this year and got this really cheap Japanese house, but without AC. I know winter in Ishikawa could become frigid cold sometimes and I am wondering whether you can survive without AC.
