Fortified plant milks - added vitamin B12 causing anxiety?
I am wondering if anyone else experienced they same issue. I am trying to add fortified non-dairy milks and yogurts to my diet for calcium, but usually these products are also fortified with B vitamins. Especially they often contain a high amount of B12 (40% - 50% of daily value in one cup). I noticed that I have increased anxiety after consuming such products. I had no problems with the Silk coconut yogurt, it had added calcium, but no B vitamins. Today my friend was having some earl grey tea with Silk almond milk. I decided to have some rooibos tea with almond milk. The tea was rooibos and therefore had no caffeine. The almond milk was the only new product that I tried, and it was fortified with B vitamins, as stated on the label. Otherwise nothing stressful occurred today and I ate regular healthy foods such as chicken, vegetables, fruits. Later on I started to have pretty severe anxiety. I developed racing thoughts and a feeling of dread, not being able to relax, a feeling coming close to a panic attack.
Why I am considering the added B vitamins as the culprit - I've experienced this issue before with vegan cheese that was fortified with B vitamins and nutritional yeast. I clearly noticed that I developed intrusive thoughts later on the in the day after eating it and had severe anxiety. I get sufficient B12 from my diet - eggs, salmon, chicken liver, etc. I am wondering if it is the extra synthetic B12 that could be causing my anxiety. Did anyone else experience this?
