What's up with Mulholland Drive?

I just finished watching Mulholland Drive for the first time. I found it atmospheric and compelling, but was left confused about the meaning or message.

One possibility is that the scene in Silencio ("No Hay Banda") is like the play-within-a-play in Hamlet or Ran that encapsulates the "discovered" meaning; perhaps a kind of nihilistic incarnation with numerous possibilities without meaning or plan .... a kind of incarnation without karma?

Maybe David Lynch was just showing off pure noir cinematography and the film is just a kind of Rorschach inkblot test where the viewer reads into it whatever they want?

Or am I missing the whole point?
