BWT - “Having Good Taste Will Not Make You Happy”
I’m curious what people think of this article. I’ve been thinking recently about how fashion and “good taste” fit together so it was right up my alley.
What is “taste?” Is it a set of rules that people raised in the right households (upper middle and above) were taught? So essentially they are class markers? And rules make me think about who is allowed to break rules and who isn’t. For example, an older white male professor asks his students to call him by his first name because everyone knows that he’s the professor because he’s an older white male. A younger female professor needs the formality and is judged for not being casual.
In terms of fashion, a young thin woman with the right class markers can break fashion “rules.” We all know that “effortlessness” actually takes a lot of effort. But some of the effort requires money (for example, orthodontics).
