(SPOILERS) The biggest reason why the Men’s Rumble winner was a GOOD choice…
I’m seeing a lot of people moaning about Jey Uso being given the nod to win the Rumble over the likes of CM Punk, John Cena and, to a lesser degree, Seth Rollins.
For such a long time, WWE fans, myself included, have been frustrated by the number of superstars that have organically grown their popularity, gotten big crowd reactions every single week, shifted a lot of merch etc., only to be held down by the proverbial ‘glass ceiling’. Happened with LA Knight within the past year or two, and has happened with a handful of others in the past decade or so.
The WWE have now given us a genuine surprise winner for the Royal Rumble, somebody who has grown a huge fan base as a singles star, who gets pretty much the largest crowd reactions every week, who has a great ongoing story arc that spans over a decade, and who is making the company a hell of a lot of money through merchandise sales. This is, without a doubt, a good thing – people deserve recognition for accomplishing so much for themselves and growing their own brands so successfully, and being given the WrestleMania main event is the biggest form of recognition in the business.
Suffice to say, I find it quite odd that people have such an issue with Jey winning. Punk and Cena not winning the Rumble does not mean that they won’t be in the main event of WrestleMania. There’s two months’ worth of storytelling between now and Mania, including the Elimination Chamber – it isn’t the end of the line for the established main eventers, and in the meantime, just be pleased that we’re getting the spotlight shone on others, for once.
