How did you feel on sedatives?

I have anxiety disorder and really scared for my surgery. I was told by the doctors that I can be given some sedatives before the operation, but I want to know your experience, how did it feel like being on those meds? How much did they calm you? Did you feel any fear or panic? Was the feeling bad?
