How to have legitimate emotional support cat in the No Pets house I rent?
TW: Suicidal Ideations
About a month and a half ago, my wife planned her suicide. She has been going through a lot of mental health issues and trying different medications, mostly to no avail. I have been supporting her as much as I can, took her to the hospital before she committed, spend every night doing things she wants with her, and do whatever I can to help around the house with chores and such.
We got her an emotional support kitten this week, and she has done absolute wonders for my wife’s mental health. I’m already seeing an improvement. We can’t have kids and part of her depression was because of that. Even if I wasn’t infertile, we can’t even afford a child. She now has a little baby to care for, and I am so happy to see her depression go way down. I’m also a huge cat lover, and we both have wanted a house cat for a long time, so it’s a win-win.
The problem is the house we rent does not allow pets under any circumstances. I decided to break that rule because my wife’s well-being matters more to me than a deposit. However my friends told me I could get her registered as an emotional support animal, and that would keep us safe from any legal stuff that might come up because of the cat.
I definitely feel I would not be taking advantage of anyone or any rules by registering our cat as an emotional support animal, because that is very much what she is. We have all the records from doctors and healthcare professionals too easily get the cat registered, so I’m not worried about that. My worry is that the huge property management company will figure out some stupid loop hole if they come and do an inspection and find cat evidence. They are already a terrible management company so I would not be surprised if they figured out a way to get us in trouble even though legally an emotional support animal is not a pet.
I wanted to hear if anyone else had similar experiences and scenarios, and if there’s anything I should do to cover my bases. Also I live in Oregon if that makes any difference. Thanks everyone!
