Tips for recovery from high ankle sprain?

I competed in a tough mudder race this September and ended up with some nerve damage and a moderate high ankle sprain. As soon as I was able to my trainer and I jumped into a gradual rehab plan and I’m frustrated because after a couple of months I feel like the progress has slowed considerably with periods where I feel like my strength and functionality is improving and then out of nowhere during a normal stride or movement I feel a twinge that puts me out of commission and fearing re-injury.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice or tips to help maintain steady recovery without these setbacks?
