Can I get citizenship through my mom?

Sorry for the vague title!

The short story is I am look for German citizenship by descent through my mom but I am not completely sure if it is possible. I have posted about this in another Reddit community but I wanted as many opinions as I could get.

My mom was born in Germany in 1971 to 2 American parents. she has a birth certificate and had to naturalize when her family moved back to the USA years later. I know normally that this would not give my mom citizenship but for most of my life they (my mom and grandma) have said that she has Dual citizenship. Typically, I would take this with skepticism, The fact that my mom had to get naturalized to America makes me think that their words hold some amount to truth to them, and both my mom, grandma and my uncle (who is also born in Germany) have confirmed that there is paperwork for relating to this.

So does this have any chance of me getting citizenship through descent, or will I have to move to German and go through the same process as many others do?
