First time seizure, should I be driving?
Hello all! This is my first post here and I’m not sure if this is the right place for it since I technically haven’t been diagnosed yet… but figure you all have the best advice so I’ll ask here and hope for the best.
I’m a 30 year old female and had brain surgery last year to be fitted with a VP shunt (ventricular-peritoneal shunt, I have a catheter that goes from my front right temporal lobe all the way to my lower abdomen to drain excess CSF) due to idiopathic intracranial hypertension. I do not have hydrocephalus, but the treatment for IIH is the same as hydrocephalus.
I had my first seizure Tuesday night (at least the first seizure that we know of, my doctor suspected nocturnal seizures a few months ago but I delayed testing due to work). I passed out during the seizure for roughly 3 minutes then afterwards I felt really dazed and confused. But once I came to, I didn’t really feel like it was an emergency so I didn’t go to the ER and made an appointment with my primary care doctor for the next morning.
My primary care doctor did a CT scan of my head and a metabolic panel, both of which returned normal. My shunt is stable. I had an appointment with my neurologist today (12/5/24) and she did an EEG, I should have results from that early next week.
As long as the EEG comes back as normal, is it reasonable to assume that I can drive again? I live in Tennessee and I can only find evidence of a 6 month driving restriction if you’re diagnosed with epilepsy and since I don’t have a formal diagnosis… I’m okay to drive, right?
TL;DR: I’ve only had one official seizure, if all tests come back normal, is it okay to drive again?
