Is a 3.86 GPA in First Semester Petroleum Engineering Good Enough for Scholarships?

Hey everyone,

I just finished my first semester in petroleum engineering and got a 3.86 GPA. I got all A’s except for thermodynamics (B+). I was actually aiming for a 4.0, but I’ve heard from seniors that the course will get significantly harder in the next semesters.

I’m particularly concerned about maintaining a 3.8+ GPA because I want to apply for the Shell scholarship. For those who have experience with it, how strict is the GPA requirement? If my GPA drops slightly below 3.8 in the later semesters, would it hurt my chances?

Also, from a career perspective, how much weight does GPA carry in petroleum engineering jobs compared to internships, projects, and networking?

Would appreciate any insights. Thanks!
