Before/after playroom remodel, need furniture advice

Our playroom has always been an awkwardly shaped, poorly utilized room. Last year, we had the wild hair idea to redesign it in sort of a "Slytherin common room" dark academia vibe.

After several weekends of bookcase construction and wall painting, we've finished with the first phase. Which means we've still got tons of stuff to do, namely:

  • Do something about the carpet
  • Do something about the ceiling
  • Do something about the furniture

This is in addition to doing all the finishing work and trim on the bookcases/window seat

I feel confident enough when it comes to custom building furniture like couches and chairs etc., but I'm experiencing the classic ADHD struggle where having unlimited options leads to a complete decision paralysis. That and the fact that I've allowed myself to become emotionally attached to the random furniture pieces like that ugly couch we've had for twenty years, so I inherently shy away from thinking about having to get rid of it.

For the floor and ceiling, my default thought is that ceiling tiles and wooden floors would be the best. And although I feel fine installing ceiling tiles, I don't at all feel comfortable installing wood floors, and hiring a contractor kinda seems to go against the DIY ethos I'm trying for. Plus, the issue with both of those is that they are very costly (which I'm not necessarily opposed to if it would be the perfect fit) and very hard to reverse if we don't like it (which terrifies me greatly).

So we're at a bit of a chicken and the egg crossroads here where it's hard to think of each of these three items in a vacuum without considering how the others will affect things.

I generally take a function-first approach to furniture, thinking about how I want to use the space. There are two alcoves off the left frame of the picture where we have computer desks for each kid, so there's already a space for homework/gaming/etc. The functions I want to be able to fill are:

  • A sitting area that faces the TV (on the right hand wall of the picture)

  • A sitting area that faces the bookshelves (IE, facing away from the camera rather than towards it). This would be an area for cuddling up and reading or playing mobile games/Switch/Steam Deck. The reason I'd want it facing away from camera is that the view of the computer desks is not nearly as attractive as the bookshelves, largely because they are each decorated with our two daughter's stylistic choices which can largely be summed up as "octopus-like tangles of charging cables and various half-finished art projects".

  • A small surface or side table for holding drinks/etc. for people sitting in either sitting area.

  • Optionally, some large surface for board games or puzzles. This is optional because we ended up converting the guest bedroom into an "annex"- I used all the wood scraps from the shelves to build a board game / craft table, and then repurposed a bunch of random furniture / wood to make more shelves and places to store art supplies. This room is immediately adjacent to the Library and still feels like part of the space. The main reason I'd be interested in a secondary surface for puzzles is that having a big unfinished puzzle on a table sort of prevents it from being used for anything else until the puzzle is done. I've included a pic for reference of this room. Eventually we'll tackle the design of the Annex but we want to get the Library done first.
