VW’s Tiguan is an absolute beast!

Around 3 months ago, my dad was coming home (Mumbai) from Pune in his Tiguan 2.0 TSI which is less than a year old. The driver was driving & dad was sitting in the backseat reading a book. At a signal on the WEH near Vile Parle, the driver was crossing the junction as the signal was green. A WagonR (Ola) came from the side & banged into our car from the right side. Our signal was properly green. Not yellow. WagonR guy was completely wrong about crossing the junction, that too at that speed! It was slightly our driver’s fault too for not noticing the WagonR coming from the right (even though our signal was green). This is India so signals are obviously not followed here.

After the accident, the WagonR guy was unconscious. WagonR’s bonet was completely crushed. The steering had pressed against the driver’s chest.

In Tiguan, the driver’s door took the impact & all the airbags came out. The driver was absolutely unhurt. My dad thought the car went through a deep pothole. The Tiguan barely moved.

Fortunately, the cops were right there & they saw this happen. They came to my dad & told him that it was that WagonR guy’s fault & that they were surprised that our car didn’t tumble considering the impact. The cops took the guy to the hospital.

WagonR was pushed to the side of the highway & it remained there for a week until it was scrapped.

Tiguan was still driveable with not a single glass shattered. Unfortunately the door (only from the outside) was crushed. On the inside, it seemed like nothing had happened.

Tiguan took 2 months to be fully repaired since it’s a CBU & all parts are imported from Germany. Also, regular VW mechanics don’t work on Tiguan. Only their “master mechanics” do it & there are very few of them.

Attaching a video of the dascham footage.

After this accident, we all realised how important safety is (we always have given importance to safety so we never buy anything apart from Tata & VW Škoda). But this just made us realise how absolutely important safety is especially in India where you could be an accident victim even if you’re waiting at the signal!
