Headlines and Previews:
Its Falcons vs Jaguars in Alabama. Comparatively a home game for the Jags, 158.01 straight miles and about 168.91 miles using a street route. Where as BGSU is over 700 miles away.
BGSU
BGSU won the admittedly horrible MAC East (Only 2 out of 7 teams at or above .500) and beat Indiana but finished losing 3 in a row including a pathetic lose to NIU (51-17). This is coach Dino Babers first ever bowl game although he does have experience coaching in the FCS playoffs with Eastern Illinois. Only beat 1 team the finished at .500 with Ohio.
BGSU has the fastest offense in the country, but turnovers and defense have been a bit of problem. 7th in the MAC in defensive efficiency and 104 in BCS and about 8th and 127.
South Alabama
South Alabama finished 4th in the Sun Belt but 2nd amongst Bowl Teams (App State and Georgia Southern won enough games but are not eligible due to NCAA rules.) This is South Alabama's first ever bowl game since joining FBS/SunBelt in 2009. Good accomplishment but they only beat 2 teams that finished above .500 (App State and Texas State). They also finish the regular season with a losing streak at 2 games. Most notable win was over Texas State which made them bowl eligible. South Alabama has almost the opposite problem of BGSU. Defense is alright. Total defense is 3rd in Sun Belt and 59th overall and efficiency 2nd and 56th. But offense leaves more to be wanted. About 90th in yards per game and 92 in total yards.
Key Players
South Alabama
You don’t know quarterback Brandon Bridge's name, but chances are you will soon. The NFL already does, as a matter of fact. The under-the-radar Canadian prospect has the prototypical build at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. He’s athletic, too, with a 40-yard dash in the neighborhood of 4.6 seconds. He struggles with accuracy, completing just 51.9 percent of his passes, but he’s thrown for 1,648 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions in an offense that leans toward running the football. The Jaguars notched 124 more carries than pass attempts.
Brandon is also a Senior and in his last year of NCAA eligibility so for him and about 34 other Seniors have nothing to lose as they will play their last game (at least as an undergrad) with the team. As well as 57 total players from the state of Alabama.
BGSU
Freshman wide receiver Roger Lewis was on the receiving end of Knapke's game-winning touchdown at Indiana. He’s been one of the bright spots for the Falcons’ offense. He finished the regular season with 69 catches for 956 yards and five scores.
Sophomore QB Jason Knapke, came in after Junior Matt Johnson who was a potential MAC award winner was hurt in the first game of the season. BGSU has about 16 seniors and zero from the state of Alabama.
