What to do after learning programming.

I’ve recently stepped my first foot into software development. I have always been a games geek and have always dreamed of making my own game, my own project, but I didn’t know where to start. Design-wise, I have a rough idea of what I’m supposed to do, but I have always been somewhat blind to the technicalities that go behind those projects.
So I gave up on med school and aimed for a computer degree in college. I write this as I have just finished my first semester there, and from the bottom of my heart, "What the fuck" (excuse my French). I get the rules of the code. I get the principle behind it, but for the love of God, I cannot produce anything off the top of my head.
I started learning Python because I heard it’s easy for beginners, which I found to be true. But I can’t write the simplest programs off the top of my head.
I need someone to tell me if this is normal or not, because now, you can’t realize how anxious I am.

I can at least read code right now, which is awesome.
