Is it worth becoming a warranted contracting officer?
Exactly what the title says. I have been working as a contract specialist for coming up on four years now. I started out as a GS-7 and I am now a GS-11, step two. I work cradle grave contracting as part of the National Guard and I am in a 100% remote position. I previously worked cradle to grave in another office but in person. I was able to learn so much in the three years that I was in that office because of the various discussions and back-and-forth interpreting regulation.
My SCS has been talking about having me become a contracting officer with a SAT warrant. My hesitation is my lack of years in contracting experience and meeting the bare minimum to go before a CORB.
Given my home life situation and my husband on active duty, working remote has been great. I am worried that if I were to become a contracting officer in a non-office setting, I won’t have the “banter” you have in an office to learn from those with more experience.
Besides the pay increase and additional responsibility, do you enjoy being a contracting officer and was it worth becoming one?
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
