AVIATOR INFORMATION

FLIGHT FOR THE PLIGHT 2007

Dear Aviator Enthusiast,

We are pleased to announce that on Saturday, 17th of November, 2007, the Rare & Endangered Species Trust (REST) will host another all day Flight for the Plight Air Show at the Otjiwarongo airfield.  We proudly invite you to Fly-in with NO landing fee at this year’s bigger and better Air Show!

This year’s programme will include flying displays, aerial competitions and a chance for pilots to observe various forms of flight and socialize with other pilots.  Nelson, the REST ambassador Cape Griffon, will be part of an exhibition highlighting the plight of this majestic and misunderstood bird.  Additionally, various games and exciting activities will be offered for the general public and will include ‘volleyball for all’ and a climbing tower. The food and bar tents will be open all day.  Day entrance will continue to be free of charge so that the entire community can participate and enjoy the event.  This is our “thank-you” to show our sincere appreciation for the year’s support.

Please join us for this fantastic event to honour a great cause…
Raising awareness of the Plight of the Cape Griffon vulture, the natural master of thermal flying.

Liability:                        All pilots fly at own risk.

Medical support:            Otjiwarongo offers a modern, private medi-clinic with the support of excellent doctors. In addition, Otjiwarongo has SOS International evacuation services to Windhoek or international destinations.

Accommodation:      Contact REST for a detailed list of accommodations in Otjiwarongo for the night of the 13th, as this years evening will include live music entertainment.

Otjiwarongo airstrip: Otjiwarongo is a private air strip. Planes on the tarmac will                     have restricted pubic access.

How you can help

During the 2005 Air Show many participants including the gyrocopters, Cessna, and Sefofane, all gave public flights at the end of the air show as a donation for REST.  If you are interested in offering public flights, please inform REST and bring your own public indemnity wavers or contact REST for ours.

Why you CAN’T miss this opportunity….

Vultures play a vital role as free sanitary workers and avert epidemics of anthrax and botulism. They are also invaluable to farmers, by pinpointing dead or sick livestock, and warning of the whereabouts of poachers. The Flight for the Plight Event will raise awareness of the real possibility that the Cape Griffon could become extinct unless urgent measures are taken to protect this species from the main threats of poisoning and electrocution.

Please try to attract some sponsorship and support REST vulture
conservation programmes
Each telemetry satellite collar and satellite time costs around US$ 11,000, which gives some indication of how vital it is that we attract as much sponsorship as possible. If you need any further information about REST programmes, please don’t hesitate to ask, or visit our website (www.RESTafrica.org).
